Silicon Valley Briefing: Innovation in the Global Digital Economy

The International LDS Business and Civic Association was pleased to host the 9th Annual Silicon Valley Briefing: Innovation in the Global Digital Economy on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at the Computer History Museum (CHM) in the heart of Silicon Valley.  This year's Briefing attracted 65 participants, including 47 from the consular community representing 27 nations.

The annual Silicon Valley Briefing offers international diplomats posted throughout California with unique opportunities for deepening understanding of Silicon Valley’s ecosystem as well as for building bridges with Valley insiders, including executives, academics, non-profit directors, and regional leaders.

This year's program kicked off with introductions of consuls in attendance, followed by a comprehensive briefing of 2023 data about the Silicon Valley economy and society in flux. Subsequent sessions focused on innovation in major tech companies and AI technology advancements and applications core to the global digital economy. The keynote featured the story of Cotopaxi as an example of using business as a force for good. The Briefing concluded with interactive experiences with Computer History Museum artifacts, a private exhibition tour, and demo.

Welcome and Introductions of Consuls

  • Marguerite Gong Hancock is Vice President at the Computer History Museum and founder and director of the Exponential Center, the first museum center dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship. Previously at Stanford for 20 years at the Graduate School of Business and Institute for International Studies, she cofounded and built several international programs focused on building technology regions around the world and served as an advisor to government, education, and business leaders in the US, Europe, and Asia. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a double major in Asian Studies and Humanities, received a MA degree from Harvard University, then trained as a political economist at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. She is author and editor of three books published by Stanford University Press.


STATE OF THE VALLEY 2023: TRENDS & CHALLENGES

  • Russell Hancock is President and CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. He is a civic leader, community gatherer, institution builder, social entrepreneur, and outspoken advocate for regionalism. Dr. Hancock also serves as President of the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, a think tank housed at Joint Venture, providing data and analysis about the world’s most dynamic economy. Educated as an undergraduate at Harvard, Russell received a PhD in political science from Stanford University where he currently teaches in the Public Policy Program. Considered one of the Valley’s leading expositors, his interviews regularly appear in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Forbes. He and his wife have three children and three grandchildren.

Tech Titan Emerging Products

  • Philip J. Carmack is Vice President and General Manager of Emerging Products at Google. He has been a serial entrepreneur and business builder in the technology industry for more than 30 years. Phil has served as CEO of PsiKick, Inc. and Aptina Imaging Corporation as well as founder and CEO at Raydiant. His extensive engineering leadership and executive management roles span many companies, including NVIDIA where he launched and led the Mobile Business Unit as Senior Vice President, 3dfx, and Gigapixel. Phil earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Brigham Young University and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Tech Titan Emerging Products

  • Channing Christensen is the Director, Head of Global Business Marketing for WhatsApp (part of Meta), where she leads all B2B marketing functions, helping large and small businesses use WhatsApp business solutions and build an enduring business brand with more than 2.2 billion users globally. Prior to WhatsApp, Channing spent five years in a variety of sales and operations leadership roles at Facebook in Singapore and at Apple in Silicon Valley. She started her career working for Obama's first presidential campaign. She holds a BS in BioInformatics from Brigham Young University and a MBA from Harvard Business School. Channing lives in the Bay Area with her husband and four children.

Harnessing AI to Benefit Humanity

  • Mykel Kochenderfer is Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Associate Professor, by courtesy, of Computer Science at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory (SISL), conducting research on advanced algorithms and analytical methods for the design of robust decision making systems. In addition, he is the director of SAIL-Toyota Center for AI Research and a co-director of the Center for AI Safety. He is an author of the textbooks Decision Making under Uncertainty: Theory and Application (MIT Press, 2015), Algorithms for Optimization (MIT Press, 2019), and Algorithms for Decision Making (MIT Press, 2022). He received a Ph.D. in informatics from the University of Edinburgh and B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from Stanford University. He is a third-generation pilot.

Global Reflections

  • Dow Wilson serves as a member of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, responsible for 20 Stakes—about 150 congregations—in Northern California. Dow also is a member of the Church’s team that delivers Humanitarian Services within the State of California. In his professional life, he retired in 2021 as CEO and Director of Varian upon the sale of the company to Siemens Healthineers, where he remains an Advisor. Varian was a cancer and equipment and services company with annual sales over $3B and a market cap over $16B. As an active board member, Dow is currently Director at Agilent. From 2014 to 2020, Dow served by appointment from the US Secretary of Commerce on the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa and later on the CEO Forum for Brazil, where he served as co-chair. A graduate of Brigham Young University, Dow also holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.


Transforming Capitalism: Using Business as a Force for Good

  • Davis Smith is the founder and CEO of Cotopaxi, an outdoor gear brand with a humanitarian mission. Cotopaxi has assisted over 4 million people living in poverty. Davis was Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s “CEO of the Year,” is an EY Entrepreneur of the Year, and previously started Brazil’s "Startup of the Year." Davis holds an MBA from the Wharton School, an MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from Brigham Young University. Davis is an adventurer who has floated down the Amazon on a self-made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea. This summer, Davis and his family are moving to Recife, Brazil where he will be a Mission President for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
